Stonehouse Town Council

Mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 Stanhaus, 2 mills valued at 17/6d and 2 vineyards at 8 pounds.
There are considerably more mills, and 2 pubs replacing the vineyards.

Stonehouse is uniquely situated in stunning countryside on the Cotswold Way and beside the Stroudwater Navigation canal.

Stonehouse is a working town with several big local employers including Renishaw and Muller.
The town also has a traditional High Street with a wide range of useful shops.

For a small town, Stonehouse has lots of facilities including a library and Stonehouse Sports Centre.

Your Council

The Town Council is made up of 14 councillors, who are all volunteers. They are representatives of the town’s residents and businesses and sit on committees and working groups that cover almost every aspect of town life.

The councillors work with district and county councillors and officers to look after the town’s interests and promote its services.

Community

Stonehouse has a population of over 8500 with a high number of employees from the locality working in the 4 business parks. There is an infant and junior school, a private primary school, a secondary school, a special educational needs school and

a private college. There is a strong sense of community, with a wide range of groups and organisations catering for every age group, background and interest. The town has three public recreation grounds including play parks at Laburnum Playing Field, Meadow Road Park, east of the High Street and at Oldends Lane. The War Memorial and Green are located at the heart of the town, which is a focal point for Remembrance.
Stonehouse Town Football Club’s home venue is at Oldends Lane and their 1st team is currently playing in the Northern Senior League.

Shopping

Stonehouse has a thriving High Street with a good mix of independent and national retailers including two butchers, a florist, an opticians, several hairdressers, a pet shop, a pharmacy, beauty salons, two kitchen designers,

and two restaurants. There is a small supermarket with a Post Office and cashpoint facility, three convenience stores and free parking in the High Street Car Park, which is also the location for the public toilets. There are a number of cafes, sandwich shops and two pubs to refresh shoppers and visitors. There is a vineyard located on Doverow Hill.

Visiting

Stonehouse is less than 3 miles away from Junctions 12 and 13 of the M5 with good links to Gloucester and Stroud. There is a railway station that provides a regular service to and from London and Stonehouse is part of the National Cycle Network.

Bus services to Gloucester and Stroud are provided by Stagecoach, with other services to Cam, Dursley and the Stanleys and there are several bus stops throughout the town. Doverow Hill (part of the Cotswold Way) and the Stroudwater Navigation Canal on our doorstep with public footpaths to and from the town centre. There are walking and cycle paths along the canalside to surrounding towns and villages. St Cyr’s Church is one of the oldest buildings in the town with the tower dating from the 14th century and is located next to Stonehouse Court Hotel, near the canal.

Neighbourhood Development Plan

The Neighbourhood Plan aims to ensure that the development of the town will contribute to what residents most value about Stonehouse; a strong, friendly community, a distinctive thriving town in a beautiful rural setting with excellent transport links and employment opportunities. All planning applications will have to pay regard to and conform with this Plan through to 2031.
